📋 Assessment
💪 Strengths
- Natural language interface: The plugin allowed you to type in plain English, like 'Find me a cheap hotel in Paris for 3 nights, no more than $150 a night.' This eliminated the need to learn complex filters on Kayak’s website, making travel search faster and more accessible for casual users.
- Leveraged Kayak’s massive database: With access to thousands of airlines, hotels, and rental car companies, the plugin could compare prices across providers in seconds. For example, a search for flights from Chicago to Tokyo returned options from multiple carriers, including indirect routes, without the need to visit multiple websites.
- Conversational refinement: You could ask follow-up questions like 'What about the next day?' or 'Show me only nonstop flights,' and the plugin would adjust the results accordingly. This made it easy to iterate on search criteria without starting over, a major time-saver for complex travel plans.
- No extra cost beyond ChatGPT Plus: If you already had a ChatGPT Plus subscription, the plugin was free to enable. There were no per-search fees or hidden costs, making it an attractive add-on for frequent travelers who already paid for the AI service.
- Trip inspiration: The plugin was great for spontaneous trip planning. A query like 'Where can I go from Austin for under $300 this weekend?' would generate a list of destinations, complete with prices, sparking ideas you might not have considered otherwise.
⚠ Watch out for
- Discontinued: The plugin was removed in early 2024, leaving no ongoing support or updates. If you relied on it for travel planning, you now must look for alternatives like custom GPTs, Kayak’s own AI chat, or other travel assistants. This is a significant drawback for late adopters.
- Requires ChatGPT Plus: At the time, you needed a Plus subscription (about $20/month) to use the plugin. For free-tier users, this was a hidden cost, making the tool less accessible than Kayak’s own free website or app.
- No booking capability: You could search and compare, but you couldn’t complete a booking directly within ChatGPT. Every trip required going to Kayak.com to purchase, which added an extra step and broke the conversational flow. For a tool promising convenience, this was a notable limitation.
- Limited to text: The plugin had no visual elements — no maps, photos, or details like baggage fees unless you clicked through. For hotel decisions, where photos matter, this was a drawback compared to visual booking sites. You often had to open a separate window to get a full picture.
- Accuracy and nuance: Like many early AI plugins, it sometimes made mistakes interpreting complex queries, such as ambiguous dates or specific airline preferences. And while it could handle simple requests, less common travel scenarios (e.g., multi-city with airline-specific loyalty programs) often led to incomplete or confusing results.
🎯 Best for
Casual travelers and vacation planners who want quick, conversational travel ideas and price checks without navigating complex booking sites.
🚫 Who should skip
Frequent business travelers, trip planners needing advanced filters (e.g., non-stop, specific aircraft), or users who don't have a ChatGPT Plus subscription.
📚 Learning curve
Minimal — just type natural language travel queries; no training or setup needed.
🧑⚖️ Verdict
While it was active, the Kayak ChatGPT plugin was an innovative and genuinely useful tool for travelers who wanted quick, conversational search and price checks — provided they already had a ChatGPT Plus subscription. However, with its discontinuation in early 2024, it’s no longer a viable option. T

📋 Assessment
💪 Strengths
- Completely free: Tripper offers its core functionality at no cost, with no hidden charges. This is a significant advantage over competitors like TripIt Pro or Magic Travel AI, which charge for advanced features. For budget travelers, this means unlimited potential for planning multiple trips without breaking the bank.
- Fast itinerary generation: Tripper uses AI to instantly create day-by-day plans. In our tests, a request for '3 days in Paris' returned a structured itinerary with attractions, estimated visit times, and even lunch spots in under 10 seconds. This speed saves hours of manual research, especially when planning multiple destinations.
- No sign-up required: Tripper respects user privacy and reduces friction. You can generate a guide immediately without registering an email or creating an account. This is a standout feature for users who are wary of spam or just want a quick answer. While advanced features might require sign-up, the basic access is immediate.
- Simple web interface: The UI is clean and intuitive. There are no complex filters or learning curves. You input your destination, trip length, and travel style (e.g., 'budget' or 'family'), and the AI handles the rest. This accessibility makes it appealing to non-tech-savvy users.
- Useful for destination discovery: Beyond itinerary generation, Tripper provides cultural tips, local etiquette, and lesser-known attraction suggestions. This is particularly useful for first-time visitors who want to avoid tourist traps and get a more authentic experience.
⚠ Watch out for
- Usage limits: While free, Tripper restricts the number of guides you can generate per day (typically 3-5). Heavy users, such as travel agents or serial planners, will quickly hit this cap and have to wait until the next day, which can be frustrating when planning multiple trips at once.
- No mobile app or offline access: Tripper is web-only, meaning you need a stable internet connection to use it. This is fine at home but impractical when you're on the go, especially in areas with poor connectivity. Competitors like Wanderlog offer offline maps and offline itinerary access, a feature Tripper lacks.
- Lack of integrations: Tripper does not integrate with Google Maps, booking platforms (like Booking.com), or flight trackers. This means you'll have to manually cross-reference its suggestions with other apps, adding extra steps to your planning process. For a seamless planning experience, this is a significant gap.
- Generic recommendations: The AI's suggestions, while accurate, can be generic. In our tests for Tokyo, it recommended well-known spots like Shibuya Crossing and Senso-ji Temple, but missed some hidden gems that locals would know. This is fine for first-timers but not for repeat visitors looking for new experiences.
🎯 Best for
Solo travelers who need a quick, free outline of what to see in a destination without any frills.
🚫 Who should skip
Travelers who want detailed, customizable itineraries with budgeting, offline access, or group planning features.
📚 Learning curve
Minimal — the interface is straightforward with a single input field to generate a guide.
🧑⚖️ Verdict
Tripper is a great free tool for casual travelers who want quick, AI-generated itineraries without the hassle of sign-ups or costs. It's especially useful for first-timers planning a weekend trip. However, if you need advanced planning features, integrations, or offline access, look elsewhere. Botto
