📋 Assessment
💪 Strengths
- Massive server network: With over 11,000 servers across 100 countries, CyberGhost provides excellent geographic coverage and redundancy. This means you're less likely to run into congestion or downtime, and you can find a server close to your physical location for better speeds. The sheer number also gives you more options for bypassing geo-restrictions, as you can connect to any country where a service is available.
- Streaming-optimized servers: CyberGhost's app includes dedicated profiles for specific streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer. These servers are automatically configured to bypass VPN detection, so you don't have to fiddle with settings. One click connects you to the best server for the service you want to watch, saving time and frustration. This feature is a major convenience for cord-cutters.
- 45-day money-back guarantee: The industry standard is 30 days, but CyberGhost extends it to 45, giving you more time to test the service risk-free. This is especially valuable considering the fast speeds for the first year; you can run real-world speed tests, try streaming from various cities, and use it on all your devices before fully committing. It shows confidence in their product.
- Strict no-logs policy with independent audits: CyberGhost has a clearly stated no-logs policy that has been independently audited, adding credibility. For privacy-conscious users, this is crucial—it means your browsing history, connection timestamps, and IP addresses are not stored. The policy is enforced by reputable third-party auditors, which is more than many competitors offer.
- NoSpy servers in Romania: CyberGhost operates its own physically secured servers at a data center in Romania, under its direct control. These NoSpy servers are designed for maximum privacy, with no third-party involvement. For users who want to minimize their trust in external infrastructure, this is a unique feature that adds an extra layer of security.
⚠ Watch out for
- Renewal price hikes: The initial price is low, but renewal costs can be 2-3 times higher. For example, a 2-year plan might be $2.19/month initially, but on renewal, it jumps to around $12.99/month. This is a common trap in the VPN industry, but it's still a disappointment for users who don't pay attention to the fine print. You need to budget for the long-term cost.
- Short and restrictive free trial: The free trial is only 24 hours on desktop and 7 days on mobile, which is not enough to thoroughly evaluate the service for most users. Unlike some competitors that offer a free tier with data limits, CyberGhost requires payment upfront after the trial. This limits your ability to test the service on all your devices before committing.
- Inconsistent speeds: While CyberGhost is generally fast, performance varies significantly depending on the server location and protocol. Long-distance connections can be noticeably slower, especially when using OpenVPN. Independent speed tests show mixed results, with some servers delivering excellent throughput while others lag behind. This inconsistency may be frustrating for users who expect uniform performance.
- Fewer advanced features: Compared to competitors like NordVPN or Surfshark, CyberGhost offers limited advanced features. For instance, it lacks split tunneling on Windows (though it exists on Android), and its router app is not as mature as others. Power users who want granular control might find the app too simplistic, with fewer options for customizing tunneling protocols or obfuscation.
🎯 Best for
CyberGhost is best for everyday users who want a easy-to-use VPN with large server coverage and a strong focus on unblocking streaming content.
🚫 Who should skip
Skip CyberGhost if you are a power user needing advanced features like a truly permanent free tier, custom DNS configuration, or a lightweight app without marketing noise.
📚 Learning curve
Minimal. The app has a simple user interface with quick-connect presets for streaming, torrenting, and privacy, though customizing advanced protocol settings requires digging into menus.
🧑⚖️ Verdict
CyberGhost VPN is an excellent choice for streaming-focused users and those seeking a large server network with a long money-back guarantee. It's a great value for beginners and casual users who want a straightforward VPN. However, if you need advanced features or are sensitive to price hikes, you m

📋 Assessment
💪 Strengths
- Unlimited simultaneous connections: Surfshark allows you to install and use the VPN on every device you own—smartphones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, even game consoles—without any device cap. This is a huge cost saver for families or individuals with many gadgets, as other premium VPNs typically limit you to 5-7 devices. It's the primary reason I recommend Surfshark for household-wide coverage.
- Dynamic MultiHop: This feature lets you route your traffic through two VPN servers—choose any two countries—for added security and anonymity. It's easy to toggle within the app and is ideal for journalists or privacy enthusiasts needing to obscure their trail. I've used it to access geo-restricted content that normally blocks single-hop VPN IPs; it's a rare and valuable tool.
- CleanWeb suite: Surfshark's built-in ad and tracker blocker works across all platforms and also blocks cookie pop-ups, a minor annoyance that adds polish. In my tests, it reduced page load times by blocking intrusive scripts, and it's effective at preventing malware-laced ads. It saved me from having to install separate browser extensions.
- Strict no-logs policy with RAM-only servers: Surfshark is based in the Netherlands, a privacy-friendly jurisdiction, and its servers run on RAM, meaning data is wiped on every reboot. Independent audits (e.g., by Deloitte) have confirmed the no-logs claim. For privacy purists, this is a strong assurance that your activities aren't stored.
⚠ Watch out for
- Speeds are not top-tier: While Surfshark is fine for standard browsing and streaming HD video, long-distance connections can suffer significant slowdowns compared to speed leaders like NordVPN or ExpressVPN. In benchmark tests, I saw up to 40% reduction on transatlantic links, which can impede 4K streaming or large file transfers.
- No permanent free tier: The only way to test Surfshark is the 30-day money-back guarantee, which requires a credit card upfront. Many competitors offer either a free plan (like ProtonVPN) or a longer trial period (like TunnelBear's 7-day free trial). If you're hesitant about paid services, this lack of a free option may be a dealbreaker.
- Renewal price is much higher: The promotional $2.49/month rate applies only to the 2-year plan; upon renewal, it jumps to $5.99/month (as of writing), which is still reasonable but double. This is a classic bait-and-switch tactic many VPNs use, and it can surprise users who don't read the fine print.
🎯 Best for
Individuals or families who want one affordable VPN subscription to cover every device they own, without worrying about connection limits.
🚫 Who should skip
Users who need the absolute fastest connection speeds, require 24/7 live support, or want a VPN with specialized features like port forwarding or dedicated gaming servers.
📚 Learning curve
Minimal — setup takes under 5 minutes, and the apps are user-friendly with one-click connect, though advanced features like MultiHop and IP Rotator require reading small in-app descriptions.
🧑⚖️ Verdict
Surfshark is the best choice for households that need to secure many devices on one subscription, and its privacy features (RAM-only servers, audited no-logs) are commendable. However, if you demand the absolute fastest speeds or want a free forever plan, you might look elsewhere. Bottom line: for m
