💪 Strengths
- Natural language interface: The plugin allowed you to type in plain English, like 'Find me a cheap hotel in Paris for 3 nights, no more than $150 a night.' This eliminated the need to learn complex filters on Kayak’s website, making travel search faster and more accessible for casual users.
- Leveraged Kayak’s massive database: With access to thousands of airlines, hotels, and rental car companies, the plugin could compare prices across providers in seconds. For example, a search for flights from Chicago to Tokyo returned options from multiple carriers, including indirect routes, without the need to visit multiple websites.
- Conversational refinement: You could ask follow-up questions like 'What about the next day?' or 'Show me only nonstop flights,' and the plugin would adjust the results accordingly. This made it easy to iterate on search criteria without starting over, a major time-saver for complex travel plans.
- No extra cost beyond ChatGPT Plus: If you already had a ChatGPT Plus subscription, the plugin was free to enable. There were no per-search fees or hidden costs, making it an attractive add-on for frequent travelers who already paid for the AI service.
- Trip inspiration: The plugin was great for spontaneous trip planning. A query like 'Where can I go from Austin for under $300 this weekend?' would generate a list of destinations, complete with prices, sparking ideas you might not have considered otherwise.
⚠ Watch out for
- Discontinued: The plugin was removed in early 2024, leaving no ongoing support or updates. If you relied on it for travel planning, you now must look for alternatives like custom GPTs, Kayak’s own AI chat, or other travel assistants. This is a significant drawback for late adopters.
- Requires ChatGPT Plus: At the time, you needed a Plus subscription (about $20/month) to use the plugin. For free-tier users, this was a hidden cost, making the tool less accessible than Kayak’s own free website or app.
- No booking capability: You could search and compare, but you couldn’t complete a booking directly within ChatGPT. Every trip required going to Kayak.com to purchase, which added an extra step and broke the conversational flow. For a tool promising convenience, this was a notable limitation.
- Limited to text: The plugin had no visual elements — no maps, photos, or details like baggage fees unless you clicked through. For hotel decisions, where photos matter, this was a drawback compared to visual booking sites. You often had to open a separate window to get a full picture.
- Accuracy and nuance: Like many early AI plugins, it sometimes made mistakes interpreting complex queries, such as ambiguous dates or specific airline preferences. And while it could handle simple requests, less common travel scenarios (e.g., multi-city with airline-specific loyalty programs) often led to incomplete or confusing results.
🎯 Best for
Casual travelers and vacation planners who want quick, conversational travel ideas and price checks without navigating complex booking sites.
🚫 Who should skip
Frequent business travelers, trip planners needing advanced filters (e.g., non-stop, specific aircraft), or users who don't have a ChatGPT Plus subscription.
📚 Learning curve
Minimal — just type natural language travel queries; no training or setup needed.
🧑⚖️ Verdict
While it was active, the Kayak ChatGPT plugin was an innovative and genuinely useful tool for travelers who wanted quick, conversational search and price checks — provided they already had a ChatGPT Plus subscription. However, with its discontinuation in early 2024, it’s no longer a viable option. T

📋 Assessment
💪 Strengths
- The interface is genuinely simple and intuitive. From the moment you open the app, you're presented with a feed of activity suggestions that you can swipe through. There's no clutter, no confusing menus. This design makes it perfect for quick browsing, especially when you're standing on a street corner wondering what to do next.
- It's completely free to use. Core features like browsing recommendations, saving favorites, and creating basic itineraries are available without any payment. This is a major advantage over competitors that gate basic features behind subscription tiers. You can test the app's value without any financial commitment.
- The recommendation engine is tailored to your preferences. You can indicate whether you prefer urban or nature activities, adventurous or relaxed experiences, and the app adjusts its suggestions accordingly. The curated approach means you're getting quality picks, not just algorithmically generated lists from review sites.
- Coverage spans both urban and nature experiences. Whether you're into street art, local food markets, hiking trails, or scenic viewpoints, the app offers a diverse range of suggestions. This diversity makes it versatile for different types of trips and interests.
⚠ Watch out for
- No collaboration features. You can't share your itinerary with friends or family, nor can you co-plan a trip. This is a significant limitation for group travel, where coordination is key. It's strictly a solo planning tool.
- No offline functionality. All suggestions require an active data connection. If you're in a remote area or traveling internationally without a data plan, the app becomes useless. Competitors like Google Maps offer offline maps, and some travel apps allow downloading itineraries for offline access.
- Lack of integration with booking and mapping platforms. You can find activities, but you can't book them directly, nor can you get directions to them. This forces you to switch to other apps to complete your plans, adding friction to the planning process.
- No detailed itinerary planning features. While you can save favorites, there's no option to create day-by-day itineraries with times and durations. This limits its usefulness for multi-day trips where you want a structured plan.
🎯 Best for
Solo travelers or adventure seekers who want spontaneous, curated local ideas without the need for detailed planning or group coordination.
🚫 Who should skip
Travelers who need comprehensive itinerary planning, booking integrations, or collaboration tools for group trips.
📚 Learning curve
Minimal — the app is straightforward with a simple interface; anyone can start discovering adventures immediately.
🧑⚖️ Verdict
Nowy Nowy is a solid choice for spontaneous solo travelers on a budget who want quick, personalized activity ideas. However, if you need collaboration, offline access, or booking integration, you'll be disappointed. Bottom line: it's a useful free tool for inspiration, but not a complete travel plan
