📋 Assessment
💪 Strengths
- Mullvad's flat €5/month pricing is a breath of fresh air. No tiered plans, no first-year discounts that balloon later — just a single, honest price that's been stable since 2009. This simplicity makes budgeting easy and removes the stress of subscription arbitrage. You pay 5 EUR, you get the full service, period.
- Signing up without an email is a privacy feature that no other major VPN offers in this way. Your only credential is a random 16-digit account number, which you generate yourself. This decouples your identity from your VPN usage entirely. The service even accepts cash payments sent via mail, allowing for truly anonymous transactions — a rarity in the industry.
- Mullvad takes security seriously with RAM-only servers across its fleet. This means that when a server reboots, all data is wiped, leaving nothing to confiscate. Additionally, WireGuard connections use post-quantum-resistant key exchange by default, future-proofing against quantum computing threats. These features have been verified by independent security audits, adding to user confidence.
- The service supports up to 5 simultaneous devices, which is generous for a flat-fee service. It also has user-friendly apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with a simple interface that displays your IP and connection status. The WireGuard implementation is top-notch, offering fast speeds (often exceeding 1 Gbps on close servers).
- Mullvad's no-log policy isn't just a promise — it's been audited in 2020 and 2023, and the company has a history of resisting data requests. In fact, they've even gone to court to defend user privacy. For privacy purists, this track record builds a level of trust that's rare in the VPN industry.
⚠ Watch out for
- Mullvad is one of the worst VPNs for streaming. It cannot reliably unblock Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, or other major geo-restricted content platforms. The reason is simple: Mullvad prioritizes privacy over content licensing deals, so it doesn't maintain the special server IPs required to bypass streaming blocks. If you want a VPN for streaming, this is a deal-breaker.
- The server network is comparatively small: around 800 servers in 50 countries. While that's sufficient for many users, it's smaller than top competitors like NordVPN (5,000+ servers) or ExpressVPN (3,000+). In less-populated regions, you may find limited server options, and peak-time congestion could slow speeds on popular locations.
- There's no free trial or free tier. You must pay the €5 to even test the service. While the price is low, some competitors offer 30-day money-back guarantees that effectively let you trial for free. Mullvad does offer a money-back period, but it's not as prominent, and the upfront payment can deter cautious buyers.
- The account number system, while privacy-friendly, has a downside: if you lose your 16-digit number, there's no way to recover it. Unlike email-based recovery, you'll just have to create a new account and lose any remaining time. This is a significant usability issue for forgetful users.
- Customer support is limited in scope. There's no live chat, only email and a comprehensive knowledge base. While response times are typically within 24 hours, urgent issues can't be resolved instantly. The support site is thorough, but some users may feel the lack of real-time assistance.

🧑⚖️ Verdict
Mullvad VPN is the clear winner for privacy absolutists who value anonymity and flat pricing over streaming and server count. If you're a journalist, activist, or privacy-conscious user, this is a must-have, and the €5/month price is a bargain. But if you're looking to unblock Netflix or need a mass
