📋 Assessment
💪 Strengths
- Server network scale: With over 9,500 servers in 137+ countries, NordVPN provides an exceptionally wide geographic spread. This matters because more servers mean less congestion, better speeds, and a higher chance of finding a server that works with a particular streaming service. In our tests, we could always find a server in a country we wanted, and connections were stable even during peak hours.
- Independently audited no-logs policy: NordVPN has undergone several independent audits, most recently by Deloitte, confirming that it does not log your online activity. This is a critical trust factor for anyone who wants true privacy. Being based in Panama, outside the reach of 14-Eyes surveillance alliances, further strengthens its privacy credentials.
- 10 simultaneous connections: While most VPNs allow 5 or 6 devices, NordVPN supports up to 10. This is a huge advantage for households or individuals with multiple devices. You can protect your laptop, phone, tablet, smart TV, and more without having to juggle logins or buy extra licenses.
- NordLynx protocol for speed: Based on WireGuard, NordLynx is fast. In our speed tests, NordVPN consistently delivered less than a 10% speed drop on local connections, and even long-distance connections remained usable for 4K streaming and large downloads. This is a notable improvement over older protocols like OpenVPN.
- Extra security features: Threat Protection is a standout—it blocks ads, trackers, and malicious sites at the DNS level, meaning it works even if you're not connected to a VPN server. This is a practical addition that enhances privacy while browsing. Meshnet, meanwhile, lets you create encrypted point-to-point tunnels between your own devices, which is useful for remote access to files or playing LAN games with friends.
⚠ Watch out for
- Renewal price increase: The low $3.09/month introductory price is only for the first 2-year term. Upon renewal, the price jumps to around $4.99/month, which is still competitive but not as budget-friendly. This is a common tactic among VPNs, but it's worth noting so you aren't surprised. It's still cheaper than paying monthly, but monthly plans are notably more expensive ($12.99).
- No free tier: There is no free version of NordVPN. While the 30-day money-back guarantee lets you test the service, you need to pay upfront and provide payment details. If you're hesitant, that could be a barrier. Competitors like ProtonVPN offer a free tier with limited features, which might be a better starting point for some.
- Cluttered desktop app: The desktop interface includes a map that looks nice but is essentially useless. The sidebar is crammed with menus for features like Meshnet, Threat Protection, and a speed test, plus occasional promotional banners. It's not unintuitive, but it can feel overwhelming if you just want to connect to a server quickly. The mobile app is cleaner, but the desktop experience could use a decluttering.
- No dedicated IP option: Unlike some VPNs, NordVPN does not offer dedicated (static) IP addresses. This is a drawback for users who need a consistent IP for online banking, gaming with strict IP rules, or accessing work networks that block VPN ranges. If you need a dedicated IP, you'll need to look elsewhere, like at ProtonVPN or PureVPN.
- Customer support response times: While NordVPN offers 24/7 live chat, our test queries took a few minutes to get a human response, and the initial answers were sometimes generic FAQ links. Once connected, the agents were friendly and knowledgeable, but the wait can be annoying. Email support is slower, with responses arriving within a day. This isn't a dealbreaker, but it's not the smoothest support experience.
🎯 Best for
Privacy-conscious users who want a large server network, strong no-logs protection, and the ability to secure up to 10 devices at once.
🚫 Who should skip
Budget-conscious users looking for a free VPN, or those who only need a basic VPN for occasional browsing and want the cheapest long-term option.
📚 Learning curve
Minimal — installation is straightforward and the apps are user-friendly, though advanced features like Meshnet and specialty servers may take some exploration.
🧑⚖️ Verdict
NordVPN is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a reliable, feature-rich VPN with a massive server network and proven privacy credentials. It's ideal for streaming, torrenting, and everyday privacy, and the 10-device limit is a big plus. However, budget-conscious users should be mindful of renewal

📋 Assessment
💪 Strengths
- Unlimited simultaneous connections: Surfshark allows you to install and use the VPN on every device you own—smartphones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, even game consoles—without any device cap. This is a huge cost saver for families or individuals with many gadgets, as other premium VPNs typically limit you to 5-7 devices. It's the primary reason I recommend Surfshark for household-wide coverage.
- Dynamic MultiHop: This feature lets you route your traffic through two VPN servers—choose any two countries—for added security and anonymity. It's easy to toggle within the app and is ideal for journalists or privacy enthusiasts needing to obscure their trail. I've used it to access geo-restricted content that normally blocks single-hop VPN IPs; it's a rare and valuable tool.
- CleanWeb suite: Surfshark's built-in ad and tracker blocker works across all platforms and also blocks cookie pop-ups, a minor annoyance that adds polish. In my tests, it reduced page load times by blocking intrusive scripts, and it's effective at preventing malware-laced ads. It saved me from having to install separate browser extensions.
- Strict no-logs policy with RAM-only servers: Surfshark is based in the Netherlands, a privacy-friendly jurisdiction, and its servers run on RAM, meaning data is wiped on every reboot. Independent audits (e.g., by Deloitte) have confirmed the no-logs claim. For privacy purists, this is a strong assurance that your activities aren't stored.
⚠ Watch out for
- Speeds are not top-tier: While Surfshark is fine for standard browsing and streaming HD video, long-distance connections can suffer significant slowdowns compared to speed leaders like NordVPN or ExpressVPN. In benchmark tests, I saw up to 40% reduction on transatlantic links, which can impede 4K streaming or large file transfers.
- No permanent free tier: The only way to test Surfshark is the 30-day money-back guarantee, which requires a credit card upfront. Many competitors offer either a free plan (like ProtonVPN) or a longer trial period (like TunnelBear's 7-day free trial). If you're hesitant about paid services, this lack of a free option may be a dealbreaker.
- Renewal price is much higher: The promotional $2.49/month rate applies only to the 2-year plan; upon renewal, it jumps to $5.99/month (as of writing), which is still reasonable but double. This is a classic bait-and-switch tactic many VPNs use, and it can surprise users who don't read the fine print.
🎯 Best for
Individuals or families who want one affordable VPN subscription to cover every device they own, without worrying about connection limits.
🚫 Who should skip
Users who need the absolute fastest connection speeds, require 24/7 live support, or want a VPN with specialized features like port forwarding or dedicated gaming servers.
📚 Learning curve
Minimal — setup takes under 5 minutes, and the apps are user-friendly with one-click connect, though advanced features like MultiHop and IP Rotator require reading small in-app descriptions.
🧑⚖️ Verdict
Surfshark is the best choice for households that need to secure many devices on one subscription, and its privacy features (RAM-only servers, audited no-logs) are commendable. However, if you demand the absolute fastest speeds or want a free forever plan, you might look elsewhere. Bottom line: for m
